The Process: Yaw Geez

Posted On Saturday, February 6, 2016

I meet my man Yaw through my sister who told me about her homegirl's boyfriend who could rhyme. Now the problem with people telling me things like "I know such a such and they can rhyme" is 9 times outta 10...they can't. But she passed me his mixtape "Entry Level" and the jawn was actually dope. Me & Yaw eventually met about two years later at my sister's BBQ up in the Bronx and we chopped it for a good minute about hip hop and linking up and working on some music together. Fast forward another year and change and after having Yaw on a rack of my Corner Radio podcasts he finally came through the crib to record to one of the bangers off my Through the Wire project called "Powder." And you already know that whenever somebody records at the crib, I've got to shoot one of my "Process" videos breaking down their writing process. So check out my newest vid with Yaw breaking down how he wrote to this "Powder" beat, his overall writing process and what 3 MC's he would wanna sit down with to chop it up about their writing process. And after peeping this jawn, go out and support some DOPE hip hop and cop Yaw's  "Hump Day" album. Trust me...it's dope!

Trust me, there's no better feeling then having your daughter hear a beat you just made, poke her head in the studio, break out a pen and a pad like L.L. and start writing rhymes. Check out my 8 year old daughter Naomi breaking down her process for writing her newest song (yeah, this chick has a nice 'lil discography...she wrote her 1st song "Never" when she was 3) "Have Fun."

One thing that a lot of cats don't know is that my wife can sing her butt off and she's kinda ill with her pen game too. From time to time if I'm playing a beat and she's feeling it she might start coming up with a melody and end up writing to it and during a recent session, I got her to sit down and chop it up about her process. Check it out...

The Process: Tony Blount

I met the homie Tony Blount a minute ago through twitter. I had written an article over at Couch Sessions that he commented on it and I peeped he was a singer so I went to check out some of his stuff and when I heard what he did over Pete & CL's "I Got A Love" (or for you younger folk Jay Electronica's "Shiny Suit Theory") I was like I gotta link up with this dude. At the time, he was resting in the DMV so we ended up linking up to go diggin' and to break bread and the rest is history. Since then Tony's moved to Connecticut but he was back out this way for a minute and he wanted me to hear some of the new stuff he's been working on (which is SICKENING BTW) but while he was in the lab ya'll KNOW I had to turn on the MPC to let him hear some of the stuff I had been cooking up for him. So check him out breaking down his "process" and some BTS footage of us cooking up something that'll prayerfully make one of the 3 EP's he's looking to drop throughout 2013.

Last week I was blessed to link up with my brother Ev and his fiance while they were down in D.C. working on a piece for Marjani's dance company. While they were here we got a chance to do a couple of photo shoots, a quick studio session to work on "Let The Rhythm Hit 'Em 2013" (a song from our EP were dropping later this year), break bread with my wife and chop it up with the newly engaged couple about what marriage is REALLY about. Check up some shots I got up plus the newest installment of "The Process" with Ev breaking down his process of writing "Let The Rhythm Hit 'Em.

One of the things I loved about our shoot in my studio is I've NEVER seen anyone get SO into their rhymes like Ev. It's literally like money was a jazz musician playing his instrument! This dude was so into the vibe of the song, it was like he was slap boxing with the beat!

The Process: Jay Rugga

This past weekend I finally had the opportunity to link up with my dude Jay Rugga to try to finish up his debut EP we're trying to drop early 2013. We ended cooking up a BANGER called "Money Got Lost" but due to some technical difficulties with pro tools, the session didn't get saved. But I did get a chance to get up some shots and some video footage of Rugga explaining his process of writing rhymes. And if ya'll forgot about the magic me and this dude cook up, check out our last banger "Can't Stop."
