The other day my dude Q got at me on Twitter and asked me do I like West Coast hip hop and I was like "Hell, yeah...I LOVE west coast hip hop! Why you ask?" And he said because all we ever discuss on The Writer's Bench is basically all east coast hip hop. I explained to money that during my formative years of growing up on hip hop from say...'85-'90, 90% of everything I heard was not just east coast hip hop but New York City hip hop. Before NWA dropped "Straight Outta Compton" in '89 the only glimpse into west coast hip hop that cats my age had was Ice T & the movie "Breakin." And those two things weren't enough to sell me on the west coast culture. Now of course, after NWA dropped it was like the levees on west coast hip hop broke and we got a flood of west coast groups coming down the pike but by the time the bulk of the groups that I was feeling (The Alkaholiks, Souls of Mischief, The Pharcyde, Cypress Hill, Dilated Peoples, Lootpack, etc.) came into play I was in college.
So again those formative of growing up on hip hop were FAR behind me. But like I explained to Q, these younger cats (dude is 32) had the opportunity to grow up on every kind of hip hop, from east coast, west coast, midwest, down south, etc. but since me & my Writer Bench brethrens didn't have the same opportunity, THAT'S why the bulk of our shows from our favorite albums, our favorite MC's to albums that influenced us and our slept on albums usually deal with all east coast hip hop and not because we don't rock with the west like that...trust, NOTHING could be further from the truth. So to send a quick salute to the west coast I threw together this mix featuring just a couple of my favorite bangers that the west coast has blessed us with. So whether you rock with the west or not, bet money that if you didn't rock with 'em, after this mix, you will.
