For this week's ep of my podcast Apt. 5B I'm chopping it up with DJ Wreck 1, Ev, Nick, Vegas, Tone, Yaw & Vern (yup, it's a packed apartment this week) about the definition of what are freestyle is. Now first things first before cats start losing their minds, I'm not discrediting Black Thought's verse on Hot 97 cause the jawn was BONKERS! BUT was it a freestyle? He said on Jimmy Fallon when he was on the couch that it was a freestyle but then in a Rolling Stone article he said that the term "freestyle" changed. So my question is why are our hip hop rules and definitions changing? Why did Thought say it was a freestyle vs. just saying it was a verse that he had in the backpack for Flex? Do different regions have different definition of the word freestyle? And can the hip hop culture continue to stand if the rules it was built on continue to change?
